Together they need to mow 1 lawn. Jack mowes 1 lawn in 7 hours. = 1/7
Marilyn mowes 1 lawn in 4 hours. = 1/4
Multiply the fractions with eachother so they get a common denominator.
1/4 * 7 = 7/28
1/7 * 4 = 4/28
Therefore 1/4 + 1/7 = 11/28
When they work together, they can move 11/28 part of a lawn in 1 hour. Now we need to know how long it takes to mow 1 lawn completely:
11/28x = 1
where x is the amount of hours it takes.
x = 1/ (11/28) = 2.545 hours
= 2 hours and 33 minutes
which is approximately 2 1/2 hours.
9)
The passenger train traveled 310 miles while the freight train traveled 210 miles, in the same amount of time.
The passenger train traveled 310 – 210 = 100 miles farther than the freight train in the same amount of time.
The passenger train travels 20 mph faster, so we can conclude that both trains traveled for 100/20 = 5 hours.
From that it follows that the speed of the passenger train is 310/5 = 62 mph
And the freight train’s speed is 210/5 = 42 mph
10)
The return trip was at double speed and took 4 hours less time. Since the return trip covered the same amount of distance as the first trip, the first trip took 8 hours, and the return trip 4 hours in total.
The distance is 208 miles. In the return trip the speed going was 208/4 = 52 mph
I think most of these problems are relatively simple, and if you can grasp these first three answers, you should be capable of doing the rest yourself. Good luck
